Tatang Ganar (1936-2004) was born in Cangkuang, Bandung of Indonesia. A renowned Indonesian modern and contemporary painter, Tatang depicted social themes, projecting the stark imbalance between the rich and poor through the portrayal of grim conditions in his paintings. Also, he had contributed to social awareness by focusing on the sombre state of the blue-collared workers by bringing the world’s attention to the needful.
Tatang went to Yogyakarta after graduation to study art at Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat, which was then the most cultural city of Indonesia. During this period, he drew inspiration and immense influences from fellow artists. When he returned to Bandung in 1961, Tatang Ganar was ready for his debut as a professional artist. It was in Bandung that he published a documented version of his paintings for the art community. They consist of extensively curated portrayals of the socio-political injustice on the poor and the day-to-day life of an average person.
His paintings in the document are termed Bunga Rampi, which translates to mangle. They are further bifurcated into three parts namely, Balada Tanpa Nada or Ballad without tune, Warna Siang dan Malam or Colors of day and night, and the third, Masa Kota Kembang or The time of Kota Kembang. These documents are one of the revered works of Tantang Ganar and his contribution to the art world.
The artist employed muted colours like brown and grey to express the seriousness and melancholy of the existing times. In his work, Asking for Building Contribution, Tatang renders a lyrical expressionism style of figurative-abstract. It shows a family of five, each face expressing despair caused by social problems like poverty. The artist through careful brushstrokes has conveyed the broken spirit of the family by using strategically painted angles and compositions.
