Sylvester Mqeku, born in 1987 in Mount Fletcher, South Africa, embarked on an artistic journey that reflects a fusion of diverse experiences and explorations. Beginning his studies in art and architectural technology, he later delved into ceramics, eventually earning a B-Tech in Fine Art with a focus on Research Methods and African Philosophy. Mqeku's trajectory led him to the historical Oliewenhuis Art Museum, where he worked and became an integral part of the education office. His passion for ceramics and artistic exploration expanded globally, with residences in France and Senegal. In 2021, he clinched the StateoftheART Gallery Award, leading to a solo exhibition titled 'Birth of the Alter Natural' in 2022. Currently pursuing a master's in design and studio art, Mqeku's research focuses on the use of sand casting as a ceramic studio technique and its adaptation to public creative practice and various fabrication technologies. His impactful journey underscores his commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, resulting in global recognition and a unique voice in contemporary South African art.
