“The world is paused, broken down into layers, shuffled, pushed back together and sent on its way. Nothing is static, there is a sense of temporary, imbalance, discomfort.”.
A self-taught artist, Niki Hare uses letters as a medium to make sense of the world around her. Her works elevate the ordinary and commonplace to a different level altogether. In her paintings, mundane experiences get processed and transmuted by artistic subjectivity and consciousness. Niki’s works are very personal, like running commentaries on life with all its anomalies, contradictions, and inconsistencies.
Born 1971 in the U.K., Niki’s works are eclectic and diverse, spanning a range of mediums such as painting, print, video art, and collage. Niki has also done many projects including large-scale murals. Passionate about painting, she is spontaneous yet conscious of her motifs and eventual process of expression. Niki believes that beyond a point, a painting treads a subconscious road, which the artist becomes a witness of. Replete with energy and an enthusiastic spirit, the motifs may belong to a certain concept but eventually herald a non-objective message.
While working, Niki moves between canvases, which allows her to play with layers and look back at a painting later, to alter the existing elements, projecting an organic method of operation. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Street Art, her artworks are characterized by a process of intricate layering and complex compositions. She is especially known for her unique word paintings through which she attempts to create a new visual language.
Niki’s work has been featured in exhibitions in Germany, U.K., and U.S. She is also a part of an important project on internet collage that has been conducted across the U.S.
