Mozes Misdy

Asian modern and contemporary artist Mozes Misdy (1941-2021) is especially known for his seascapes. These paintings in the form of boats and coastal views provide an astute portrayal of the lives of local fishermen. Born in Java, Indonesia, Misdy is widely regarded in Indonesia as one of the pioneers of the palette technique, that is using a palette knife instead of a brush to create a three-dimensional artwork.

Misdy’s artistic oeuvre is vast and expansive. Besides seascapes, he excelled in painting landscapes and the simple rural life of Indonesia. Many of his paintings capture the simplicity and sweetness of a bucolic rural existence. One can find the coordinated rhythms and synergy of the local folk culture of Indonesia steeped in layers of shades. At the same time, Misdy’s oeuvre also comprises brilliant female portraits.

Misdy’s stature in the art world of Indonesia is legendary. There is an art museum in the country named after him, which is known as the Mozes Misdy Museum & Art Gallery. Misdy has exhibited his works in many solo shows across Indonesia and other countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Canada and Australia. His works have been sold at many auctions at remarkable prices.
