    Martin Gale

Martin Gale was born in Worcester, England in 1949 and moved to Ireland at an early age, where he has since established his career and home in Co. Kildare. He studied painting and drawing at the National College of Art and Design from 1968 to 1973, grounding his work in disciplined academic training. Gale’s paintings explore the dynamic interaction between contemporary Irish life and its rural landscape. His meticulously composed works depict isolated figures—both human and animal—that appear dislocated from their environments, while crumbling buildings and derelict houses evoke a tension between rural traditions and urban encroachment.

Elected a member of Aosdána in 1982 and later the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1996, Gale’s contributions to Irish art have been widely recognized. A former board member of the National Gallery of Ireland, he represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1980 and has participated in major national and international surveys of contemporary and 20th-century Irish art. In 2013, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Art from NUI Maynooth. His works are held in prestigious public collections across Ireland, including the National Gallery of Ireland, the Arts Council, Bank of Ireland, ESB, IMMA, the Chester Beatty Library, and the Crawford Art Gallery.
