    Lindokuhle Khumalo

Born in 1995 in Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal, Lindokuhle Khumalo is an upcoming African artist. Notably, he was raised by a single mother. After he graduated from Ubuhlebesizwe Secondary School, he studied art at BAT Centre, Durban. Later, he participated in a residency at Rorkes Drift Craft Centre in 2016 to study textile printing with Swedish artist Marlin Sellmen. As his career progressed, he received the commission of murals from the government in 2017. Khumalo has attended several workshops at the African Art Centre, the University of Technology, and the Velobala Development Program.

Khumalo has been a part of various exhibitions across the African continent. In 2020, he received the significant opportunity of his career by fetching a solo exhibition at the AKAA art fair. His works are in prominent collection catalogs like the National Art Bank in South Africa and private collections. His oeuvre creates a loud voice towards remote African societies' socio-political topics and cultural issues. Significantly, the children in his paintings denote deep-rooted psychological angst that he must have experienced in his native.

Besides reflecting socio-political concerns, his work highlights a personal quest to explore current cultural values. Moreover, he is interested in Zulu spirituality, which gradually emerges in his practice. Khumalo uses figuration in the paintings, adorned with props or objects that aid in his storytelling. In Khumalo's work, the color green, a symbol of hope, is recurring. In addition to being a source of inspiration, it is also a way to keep a connection with his ancestral root.
