Lesley Oldaker is a British visual artist who explores the shared space between humans to capture all the experiences that are natural and common to all of us. She got her initial training in HNC Fine Art Painting from the University of Creative Artists in the UK. Creating a tangible atmosphere in her work, Oldaker draws in a figurative style, almost on the verge of expressionism.
Oldaker’s depictions can be described as an observation of our modern society. A sense of purpose seems to be a subject that she tries to identify, capturing our transient nature in the process. Tackling complex relationships through random groups of figures that roam and interact with the space around them, the cohort almost merges with the ether.
The media has been a constant source of information, motivation and a causative factor towards expressing her concerns. These are further explored and extrapolated in her works, which is evident from being a response to current social conditions. Hints of personal touch alongside observations of behaviour are recurrent to Oldaker’s oeuvre. Capturing the continuity of life, Oldaker makes the audience wonder about the essence of the urban space that we share. However, it’s hard to find a single interpretation in the abstraction of space, colour, form, emotion and the dynamic nature of her paintings.
Using oil paint as her medium of articulation, Oldaker engraves a sense of fluidity in a dexterous manner. Apart from the eerie representation of figures moving vertical, the varied sense of composition identifies the break from the monotonous imagery. Oldaker’s work is part of various private collections around the world. She has exhibited in the UK, Switzerland, Italy, China, France as well as India.
