    Kufa Makwavarara

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1983, Kufa Makwavarara’s artworks are in the permanent collection of Zimbabwe National  gallery. Painting from an early age, Kufa’s oeuvre is full of tribal natives manoeuvring through modern spaces. Are these works a symbol of larger gentrification? Or do they  symbolise the augment of civilisation? The gradual rendering of these figures denotes the excellence and expertise of skills and craftsmanship.

Fetching rewards for his works from his childhood, Kufa was fortunate to show at an exhibition sponsored by the European Union Delegation to The Republic of Zimbabwe in 2013. He has exhibited in several galleries worldwide. Also, he taught temporarily at the Mabvuku Roman Catholic Youth Centre under the Auspices of the French Embassy in Zimbabwe. Kufa Makwavarara's works are featured in the Zeitz MOCAA exhibition, Five Bhobh – Painting at the End of an Era in 2019.

Notably, Kufa’s practice ranges from the social, political and cultural motifs that indirectly question the ongoing problem of the land and population. The figures have never been alone rather they are associated with symbolic props that not only belong to the social paraphernalia but withdraw from diverse fields. Implying cultural vitality, the forms also borrow from African mythology, reinventing the contexts with contemporary highlights. Specifically, they speak of political hypocrisy and persisting concerns about African culture, diaspora and migration. Could they be an alternative concept of the world where the native is satisfied with the shifting cultures?
