An abstract artist, born 1965 in Hong Kong, China, Karen Wong grew up in Canada. After completing a degree in psychology from York University, Wong started working as a freelancing photographer and an artist. She extends her passion for expression and representational art in her figurative paintings and photography.
By not only understanding the pretension of art, but Wong also associates the beauty of her work with the human condition. Despite having no traditional training from any art schools, Wong keeps her knowledge at its peak by attending a multitude of different workshops. Through these, she has perfected drawing and old classical techniques. An exposure through her time spent at the different classical museums in Canada and the US is reflected in her portraits.
Wong believes the experiences of mundane daily life can get tedious and exhausting, but in those times there are often moments of hope and glory. She works towards capturing the life of that precise moment, as she wishes everyone who views it will be able to live it themselves. As all of life is chaotic and destructive, there is a subtle infiniteness to capture. Her oils and acrylics, paired with her knowledge of psychology, manage to beautifully encapsulate realism infused with abstraction.
Wong expresses freedom in layering textures to create various hues that haven’t been encountered yet. Her playfulness with lines leads to creating moments of entropy, capturing emotions of anger, regret or cathartic screaming of joy.
Wong is internationally recognized while her works are in private collections in Canada, the United States, Asia as well as Europe. She is also an entrepreneur, investor and cultural leader. She aims to, in her words, “cut through the bullshit to find the beauty”.
