    Julian Barrow

Julian Barrow was a distinguished British painter, admired for his luminous landscapes, architectural views, and refined interior scenes. Born in Cumberland, he went on to study in Florence under the celebrated portraitist Pietro Annigoni, before embarking on a lifelong journey as a painter-traveler. His work took him across the globe, from London and New York to India, the Middle East, and the Far East, where he captured the character of cities, homes, and landscapes with clarity and warmth.

For most of his career, Barrow lived with his wife Serena in a historic Chelsea studio on Tite Street—once occupied by great artists including John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy and served as President of the Chelsea Art Society for many years, remaining a central figure in the London art community.

Barrow earned particular renown as “a country house painter par excellence,” with commissions to depict interiors and exteriors of historic estates throughout Britain, Ireland, and the United States. He also painted many of London and New York’s private clubs. In 1977, he produced a celebrated painting of the House of Lords for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, now in Westminster. His works continue to radiate vitality, light, and a deep appreciation of beauty.
