Henry Mzili Mujunga practices painting, printmaking and conceptual art. Blooming with colours and vivacity, his figurative painting denotes the idea of a utopian world in the dystopian conditions. Are these remembrances, or a figment of his subconscious mind?
Henry was born in 1971 in Mulago native of Kampala in Uganda. He got his training from the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art MTSIFA of Makerere University. Later from the same institute, he received a postgraduate diploma in education. Believing in community growth, Henry is a part of East African Art Group | Index Mashariki. He is also a member of the Pan African Circle of Artists (PACA) and serves as vice president of the Uganda Artists Association (UAA). Through these roles, Henry attempts at developing important networks among African artists. Aiming to sustain the cultural exchange, he believes in reviving the dialogue and changing parameters that affect production.
Henry’s practice is indigenous on the surface of globalised tendencies. Intuitive and expressionist, his artworks instead of entering the surrealist realm develop into an intended reality. Ranging from the subconscious realm to reflecting on the urban reality of pleasure and consumption, the figurative in his works are emblems of his experience, memory and identity. Specifically, he continues to work with the underprivileged community of Uganda. Having fetched international accolades, henry is the winner of the Royal Overseal League art scholarship. He has extensively exhibited his paintings in international galleries
