    Emilio Rivera Merlin

Emilio Rivera Merlin (1890–1977) was a Cuban painter known for his academic landscapes, genre scenes, and portraiture. Born in Güira de Melena, Havana Province, he demonstrated artistic promise early on and, in 1916, earned a scholarship from the city of Havana to study at the prestigious Academy of San Alejandro. After completing his training, Merlin traveled to Europe, where he furthered his studies and artistic development.

Settling in Madrid, he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. His time in Spain proved pivotal; he immersed himself in the country’s cultural and natural environments, creating over 190 paintings that captured the life and landscapes of urban and rural Spain. These works reflected his strong academic foundation and growing interest in everyday subjects rendered with sensitivity and depth.

Merlin returned to Cuba in 1924 and soon received a significant commission in Mexico to paint portraits of key political figures, including President Plutarco Elías Calles and Governor Francisco Serrano. His ability to capture character and presence earned him critical recognition.

Throughout his life, Merlin remained committed to representational painting, leaving behind a legacy grounded in classical technique and enriched by his international experience and cultural observations.
