    Edward Clifford

Edward Clifford (1844–1907) was an English artist and author, known for his watercolor portraits and his association with the Aesthetic Movement in late 19th-century England. He was also actively involved in charitable work as the honorary Secretary of the Church Army, an evangelical organization linked to the Church of England.

Clifford's humanitarian work took him across the world. He traveled to India and Kashmir to study leprosy control methods, reflecting the widespread concern about the disease at the time. In 1888, he visited the leper colony in Kalaupapa, Hawaii, where he met Father Damien, a Catholic missionary renowned for his work with leprosy patients. Clifford was deeply moved by Damien’s efforts, and his encounter with the priest influenced his later work. After returning to England, Clifford created watercolors from his sketches of the leper colony and Father Damien, publishing an account of his journey in 1889.

Clifford's work is held in numerous prestigious collections, including the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, the Harvard University Portrait Collection, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the National Portrait Gallery in the United States.
