Dr Iztok Retar

"I compose a picture that consists of lines that form a story connected to a strong colored surface. In this way, I analyze the principles and relationships of lines between light and shadow".

Dr. Iztok Retar is a Slovenian contemporary artist, born in 1958. Retar is a PhD holder at the University of Primorska, where he teaches didactics of sports. Being a self-taught artist, he started his artistic journey in 2017. Throughout his art career, Iztok has made numerous acrylic on canvas in an abstract style. He takes inspiration from the Mediterranean and similarly displays the vibrancy and vividness in the painting done in acrylic colors. This has led him to keep his art-making method open, but to connect with his experiences and perceptions that can provoke an emotional response. 

Expressing himself through color compositions arranged rhythmically on one side, and simply on the other, he shows the complexity of life balanced with subtle attributes. One is reminded of Jackson Pollock's action paintings. Similar to Pollock, Iztok uses the drip technique while working on a canvas on the ground. Sort of performative, the work demands a total engagement of mind and body.

Retar has displayed his works at different locations around the globe.
