Dorian Radu

Dorian has been painted portraits destined to prestigious figures such as the Prince Nicholas Medforth-Mills of Romania, Actor Kit Harrington, DJ and Producer Trevor Nelson, Broadcaster Nihal Arthanayake.

He is the winner of the most prestigious award in the world when it comes to miniature paintings and an award that can be won only once in a life-time: The Gold Memorial Bowl, awarded by the Royal Society of Miniature Painters in London.

Philip Mould OBE (International Art Dealer, Portrait specialist and Creator of the BBC Fake or Fortune TV Series) awarded Dorian with the L. Cornelissen & Son Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, with the mention "his skill will be taking over".

Dorian's portraiture work has been exhibited in exhibitions such as the Royal Scottish Academy Open 2018, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of Miniature Artists, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Wells Contemporary, Signature Art prize and the list continues.

As an artist, Dorian enjoys asking questions, transforming his pieces into small riddles. While at first sight his paintings seem nothing but accurate replicas of reality, the identities of the pensive faces that appear on canvas are concealed behind small hints, ranging from the titling of the pieces, to the gazes of the models and the context surrounding them.

Each element is always included for a reason, acting as a brick that helps building and reshaping the overall story of the painting.

Dorian’s art is at a junction between traditional and contemporary principles, as the main aim is to bring back the aesthetics and criteria of traditional portrait painting and also identify the role of portraiture in contemporary art, as the artist juggles with the limitless meanings and purposes of the human figure.
