Carl Wuttke

Carl Wuttke (1849–1927) was a German landscape and architectural painter known for his travels and vivid depictions of exotic locations. Born in Trebnitz, he studied at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1871 to 1873, followed by training in Munich with Angelo Quaglio. He continued his artistic education with Eugen Dücker at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf until 1880.

Wuttke was an avid traveler, which greatly influenced his art. He first traveled to Italy on foot in 1874 and spent two years sketching and painting there. His visits to Sardinia and Sicily were particularly important for his work. He also explored other regions, including Andalusia in 1880 and Norway in 1894. From 1885, Wuttke made Munich his home, but he continued to travel widely.

In addition to European destinations, Wuttke ventured to more distant places like Algeria, Egypt, and the Sudan. One of his major trips was to the United States in 1893. Between 1897 and 1899, he traveled around the world, visiting countries such as China and Japan. 

Wuttke’s landscapes often featured small genre scenes, with bright colours and fleeting compositions. His style, sometimes categorized as 'Pre-Impressionist,' became more vivid over time, though he did not align himself with any formal art movement. Wuttke passed away in Munich in 1927, leaving a legacy of richly detailed landscapes.
