Brett Hammond is known for his distinctive spray-painted canvas panels that offer his unique interpretation and recasting of pop art tradition. His artworks seep in bright colours with human characters and catchy punchlines, brink on the edge of popular comic strips.
Born 1971 in the US, Hammond studied art rather sporadically and unconventionally. He absorbed myriad influences from the vibrant energy of the streets of San Francisco and the cooling greens of Sonoma Country’s environment. Hammond’s earliest influences date back to Mad Magazine comic art, which was bought by his uncle, motivating him to create his own illustrations.
After studying multimedia and graphic design in college, Hammond moved to Santa Barbara, where he freelanced as a graphic designer for the skateboard, surfer industries and punk rock bands. This helped build his expertise in rendering and developing strips, more importantly, ideate human relationships and their nitty-gritty.
Hammond’s work is witty, edgy, cool, funny and vibrant. Hinting on some astute observations on love, sexuality and many other aspects of contemporary society, Hammond narratives are precise and conveying. But the tone is so upbeat and light-hearted that his art would give a viewer joyful and cheerful vibes. Hammond’s work is accessible to everyone, right from a layperson to an art connoisseur.
In one of the interviews, done by Dress to Kill magazine, he confesses that his ideas are indeed impulsive and execution ‘starts with anything from a bar napkin to a scrap of paper’. In the same conversation, he shares his inspiration from random things, which are like ‘having too much coffee and just waking up at 4 in the morning’. Brett Hammond has exhibited his work at galleries like CODA Gallery and Erena Galleries and Gardens in the US.
He lives and works in Sonoma, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara.
