    Anupama Alias

Anupama Alias Anil is a contemporary Indian artist whose work explores themes of identity, transition, and the layered experiences of womanhood. Her practice often focuses on women at moments of psychological and emotional transition, particularly the ‘in-between’ phases of life that lie beyond adolescence yet before later maturity. Through these explorations, she examines the shifting nature of identity and the internal negotiations that shape the experience of being both a girl and a woman.

Anupama frequently engages with the human body as a metaphorical and conceptual framework. Inspired in part by the biblical narrative of Eve’s creation from Adam’s rib, she began exploring human anatomy as a visual language within her work. The rib cage, in particular, has become a recurring motif, functioning as a structural and symbolic element that allows her to examine themes of vulnerability, protection, and self-discovery.

She completed her BFA and MFA in Applied Art from the RLV College of Music and Fine Arts in 2011 and 2014, and later earned an MFA in Painting from the University of Hyderabad in 2016. Her achievements include the Art for Hope Grant by the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (2021), the Sankara Menon Memorial Gold Medal from Kerala Lalithakala Akademi (2016), and a Young Artist Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. She has also participated in the Rizq Art Initiative Residency in Abu Dhabi (2024).
