    Alfred Conteh

Alfred Amadu Conteh is an American contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores identity, history, and the lived experiences of African American communities in the American South. Born in Fort Valley, Georgia, in 1975, he earned a BFA from Hampton University and an MFA from Georgia Southern University. Drawing from his African American and Sierra Leonean heritage, Conteh's work reflects on personal and collective histories, examining the intersections of culture, race, and social identity.

Working across painting, sculpture, and mixed media, Conteh combines symbolic imagery with expressive forms to create works that address issues of power, memory, and resilience. His practice often focuses on the complexities of the African diaspora, investigating themes of economic inequality, education, labour, and community. Through series such as Two Fronts, he considers the social and psychological challenges faced by contemporary Black communities, while encouraging dialogue around broader questions of justice and representation.

Conteh has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, with solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries including the Tubman Museum, the Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Hudgens Center for Art and Learning, and Art Basel Miami. His works are held in numerous public and private collections, and he is widely recognised as an important voice in contemporary American art.
