Marlia Folger is known for her semi-comic paintings of glamorous women. Gradually fetching high prices in the art market, she is most popular for her analytical and “cool” works. They combine minimalistic qualities and complexity of thought creating an image without cloying sympathies.

Folger creates photorealistic images of women, a theme recurrent to her oeuvre. Her style involves the usage of acrylics and oil paints, which predominantly express the sexuality and feminine aspects of women. Representing a quasi-retro theme with carefree women, her depictions include lingerie-clad female figures with vibrant and vampy red lips with high heels. Interestingly, as a gesture of humour, she composes pizza slices, pineapple, among other motifs with the figures, beautifying the context compulsively. The flamboyant yet simple compositions disclose the innermost desires of the affluent life of a common individual.

Subtle and suggestive, the messages are delivered in Folger’s work through the clothes worn by her subjects, which are often the titles of her paintings as well.
