During 1984-88 he participated in the Salon d’Automne, Paris.

Chittrovanu Mazumdar may, in some of his moods, appear to be a textbook example of the abstraction/figuration binary, but he is in fact an encyclopaedist of the tension between formation and erasure in urban space: he replays and modulates the city as visual ethos, his images caroming off billboards, poster-covered walls, pop-music commercials and Net grabs.

Chittrovanu Mazumdar is hailed as one of the most enterprising painters India has nurtured over the last couple of decades. In him we have an artist who interprets artistic licence to best suit his temperament as a painter. His work is characterised by an inimitable sense of quest and is steeped in an intense sensuality which has an endearing appeal that is hard to ignore. Mazumdar’s paintings are expressions of the pulsating world, screened through a sensitive sieve that reproduces images caught in the mind’s eye but refrains from schoolish elucidation. And therein lies the mystery that surrounds his work. Here is an artist who refuses to offer any clarifications, thus probing into the deepest abyss of the human heart and urging it to feel his art.

He lives and works in Kolkata.
“The concept of incompleteness as a basic principle, keeping open to knowing that it does not yet know what it will be - and with it, the importance of inscribing this ’non-knowledge’ in the work and the very way of working.”
