Sunil Das

Sunil Das was born in Calcutta in the western state of Bengal, India on 4th August 1939. From 1954 to 59, he studied at the Govt. College of Art and Craft, Calcutta.

In 1955, he joined the Weavers Service Centre office of the Handloom Ministry of Textile Govt. of India. In 1960, he along with others founded the Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta.

From 1961-63, he studied at the École Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris and was declared Member de la Societe des Muses Nationale d' Art Moderne, Paris.

Sunil Das enjoys a unique position among the front ranking artists of India. His line is an experience that cannot be described in words. In the world of line, he is able to create a velvet measure of dynamism. In terms of inventive desire, momentous discoveries and the potent power of the line, the artist reigns supreme and strategic. His eternally favourite bull and horse always plays a very important role in his works.

On account of his stature as an artist, he has held a number of important posts in the past. In 1979, he was elected Member of Purchase Committee for National Art Exhibition and Miniature Format Exhibition; In 1981, he was invited as Jury for the Hyderabad State Akademi, Hyderabad; In 1982, he was a Committee member of 5th Triennale India; In 1982, he was elected jury member for National Exhibition of Art, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi.

Das has participated in many exhibitions including National Exhibition, New Delhi 1964-66; AIFACS exhibition, New Delhi, 1964; Society of Contemporary Artists, Bombay, New Delhi, 1964; 'Confrontations an Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings by Sunil Das', Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay, 1984; Exhibition at Dhoomimal Art Gallery, New Delhi, 1984-86; Trend in Bengal Art, Tata Centre, Calcutta, 1985; Exhibition at Sanfrancisco, U.S.A., 1999; Exhibition at Suntache Gallery, Monsur, 2000; Exhibition at Art Heritage, New Delhi, 2000; 'Sunil Das: Drawings', Art Heritage, New Delhi, 2001; 'Drawing - Bulls & Horses', Dhoomimal Art Gallery, New Delhi, 2001.

Das received many awards including National Award from West Bengal Govt., Calcutta, 1959 and the Gold Medal, Calcutta University, Calcutta, 1960. He was also the record winner of six state awards in a year from West Bengal Govt., Calcutta, 1960. 

Sunil Das currently lives and works in Calcutta.
